The salt lake.

Papa, floating.

Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS at 45.0 mm; 1/100 sec, f/16.0, ISO 100
Bri, floating. I was "standing" straight up. My feet were directly below my head, but not touching anything. Normal water, I'd be on the bottom. Salt water...I can't sink.

Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS at 24.0 mm; 1/80 sec, f/16.0, ISO 100
Salt lake. Blue, blue.

Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS at 85.0 mm; 1/100 sec, f/16.0, ISO 100
Yow! This was the 'opposite' end of the salt lake. Crisp! Color!

The "other side" of the salt lake. Our Explora safety van is a small dot in the middle of the picture.

Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS at 105.0 mm; 1/5000 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
Salt, up close. Papa and I walked around the lake (because I wanted to see the other side [photos above] up close), and this was the crud we walked through on the way back. The lake was obviously very, very down.

Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS at 24.0 mm; 1/500 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
After a HUGE nap, we then took another excursion to a very, very dry and hilly spot.

Rock sculpture in the Valle de la Luna at sunset. Wonderful color and light. Just too quick -- the group was leaving (to get out of the valley before dark) AND the sun was setting fast.

Wow. San Pedro de Atacama near sunset.

Behn and Rita, San Pedro de Atacama. The tilt-shift, amazingly, focused (manually, yay Bri!) on them.

The last panoramic I could do of the Valle de la Luna. Sunset. The group has left. The guide that wanted to be at the rear is looking at me angrily. BUT, LOOK at the color! WOW!

Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS at 105.0 mm; 1/15 sec, f/5.7, ISO 100
Not windy here. No siree.

We're all tired now. But almost, almost, please, there.

Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS at 24.0 mm; 1/30 sec, f/5.7, ISO 100
Dear visitor; aside from the pictures that look like it's cold and snowy, and the ones that look like we're completely lost in an arid desert, and this one that looks like we're broiling under a harsh sun....it was very pleasant.

Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS at 24.0 mm; 1/100 sec, f/5.7, ISO 100
Picture in mind...didn't come out so great. Almost. A very dark shadowy diagonal line, hit by a not so dark horizontal line, with mountains to give it some interest. I can't see it on the tiny preview, so click on the picture.

Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS at 24.0 mm; 1/25 sec, f/5.7, ISO 100
Now completely overexposed.

As a final joke, we had to walk UP this hill which was made of fine beach sand. Well, they walked. I ran, since I fell behind taking photos.

Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS at 47.0 mm; 1/30 sec, f/5.7, ISO 100
Another attempt at the geometrical-photo-in-sunset. This is terrible.

Behn! You can do it!

Canon EOS 40D with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS at 35.0 mm; 5 sec, f/5.0, ISO 100
This was torture. I brought a tripod for the previous hike, but forgot it on the van. I didn't need it for the hike, and completely forgot about it. I switched vans to go back, and we were treated to an amazing moon-rise during sunset. The guide told us to ask for a stop WHENEVER, and I asked for one. Using a step made out of plywood (used to get us cattle in/out of the vans) as a tripod, along with a variety of poorly chosen rocks, I managed to make a stable tripod for this photo.

The opposite side, looking into the sunset, was just as remarkable.

John, who took a later van back and was still in the hills, got this fantastic shot.

I'm guessing this is Sairecabur, Licancabur and Juriques, on the border with Bolivia.
