2010-07-18 -- New Chitose to Magadan

Checking into Russia was an experience. Immediately after popping open the door, we were greeted by three soldiers, two customs agents, a doctor and a very pissed off handler. The doctor immediately asked if we were sick and took our temperature. I guess we were healthy, since we received a certificate that we passed inspection. Now, we had to stand around and....wait....for half an hour while the soldiers and agents and handler....I have no idea. We just waited for a long time. Then went to the "terminal" to check into Russia where we waited some more. It took about 10 minutes PER PERSON to clear immigration. Customs was simple, run the bags through the X-ray, consent to opening a few of the "suspicious" ones.

The handler was apparently angry that we didn't use him to arrange taxis, hotel, etc, etc, making it quite clear that once we were checked in, we weren't his problem. Nevertheless, we somehow arranged a taxi to Magadan, about 45 minutes away. Being so far north, it stayed bright very late, and Dad and I wandered around a bit.

Dinner was at the hotel. Wow, and I thought picking something to eat in Japan was tough! Lots of deer on the menu! I settled (as did most of us) for a stew -- which turned out to be a small cup with potatoes and ground meat (deer, I think). Mine was clearly the first or last dished up, being more like soup than stew. Oh well.

Halfway through dinner -- I should say halfway through the wait for dinner -- Jeffrey and Renee threw a birthday celebration for me. I was so close to having two this year.

A glorious morning greeted us at New Chitose.

We had the airport to ourselves.

It cleared a little bit before we left.

But by the time we got to Russia, it cleared off, revealing reasonably pretty landscape. GPS said this is 15nm east of Magadan.

The Magadan airport is next to Sokol. Magadan is 45 minutes away.

The terminal is a little rough in places.

And other places it's...marble? Nah, can't be! I wish I got a better picture of that mural.

Customs is clearly tacked on.

Buy, see! We're not faking this.

What do you do with old planes? Put them on pedistals! Make a sign for the airport! I was a little hesitant to go wandering off.

More proof we're not making this up.

More planes on pedistals. These are attacking!

Was 2010 a celebration, or just the year this tower was constructed?

I don't remember seeing this originally. A Columbia Sportswear Company store. Everything else I saw here -- weeds everywhere, busted buildings, industry shuttered -- indicated a town barely surviving.

Back to windows. Is this the typical Central and South America trick of hiding awesomeness behind plain exteriors, or is this just barely surviving?

I lean towards barely surviving.

"Gorodskoi Park" -- literally "Town Park" -- in Magadan. I found an older version of this gateway. The park was plesant, but not photogenic. This was just up the street from our hotel, and exited into a vacant lot kind of behind it. Here's a map.

Pleasant looking street. At least, it's not the big block buildings.

Good Angel of Peace. The detail on this is nice. She isn't holding the bird, but just released it. My weak partial translation:

Hmm, more references to 2010. Wikipedia given no real hints what was special then. We missed Town Day by ONE DAY!

Here's the group. The other half of us went to Petropavlosk and got weathered in. I think, anyway.
