2010-06-28 -- Borobudur to Bali to Australia

Being so terribly close to Australia, and not going there, seemed just wrong. After flying 20,000 miles, what's another 800 or so, right? So, off we go to Australia!

We arrived after dark, well after dark. Lets see: A three and a half hour flight, with an hour spent in Bali picking up fuel and Guilliame, and a two hour flight from Borobudur to Bali, and a frustrating amount of time getting out of Borobudur, and an hour drive to the airport.

The handler/FBO at Darwin was excellent! Friendly, helpful...he even gave us a ride to the hotel, and a quick tour down main street. We went back to main street for pizza and beer, then bed.

Sunrise (an hour or two after anyway) in Borobudur. Reports from those that went to the temple for sunrise (the actual sunrise) were that it was excellent. Clear, a little hazy, but good for a nice sunrise.

While waiting for departure, the local Air Force was practicing formation flying (and generally slowing us down by using the runways).

The NOTAMs warn us that the grass field to the south (?) of the main runway is used for parachuting. Here, two black parachute specs, an airliner leaving and an airliner waiting to taxi back for take off. Busy place!

"Be The First Class Air Force", loved it the first time I saw it, still love it.

The rabbit lights off into the jungle (hard to see, they're just above the front tip of the wing, brown poles with little dots on them).

Rocks in those fluffy things!

We got a terrible routing from Borobudur to Bali. Shortly after turning at SO we got direct to BA, which helped a whole lot.

Airport in sight!

Landing runway 9, Bali! (Stupid propellor keeps getting in the way.) Unlike Greenland, this guy waited for us to land.

Really, we're in Bali. Bandar Udara Ngurah Rai Bali!

After getting fuel, on the way out, we had to wait for this guy (and a couple more) to land before we could take off again. Not exactly the picture I wanted -- always better to get the whole plane in the picture -- but still fun.

Somewhere near Bali, a ginormous hole in the ground. Wonder what they're digging for. Wonder how close to sea level they are.

I think right around here we lost VHF communication, and had a little bit of trouble communicating that we are not, I repeat, are not HF equipped. Negative HF. We eventually got things worked out, but since Guilliame wanted to watch a movie, we turned off the headsets in the back....which also turned off the radio recorder, so I can't transcribe or post the exchange. There was a relay from an airliner involved -- interesting because we (obviously) couldn't hear ATC, thought the relay was ATC, only to have him be passed off a bit later.

Sunset, looking backwards on the left side. About the same as the right side, huh?

Darwin has a bit of restricted air space around it, none of which was active. They also let us ignore the lengthy approach....direct to destination!

It got dark.

The most expensive beer and pizza we've had.
