2009-05-31 -- Santorini to Istanbul

On paper, a simple flying day. About 320 NM from Santorini to Instanbul, slightly more than an hour. We left for the airport at 10:30am -- which seems to be the standard now -- expecting to get off the ground at 11:30am. One hour in flight, a bit of screwing around with fuel after the flight, an hour to get to the hotel, a time zone change, and so we should be sipping tasty drinks by the pool at 3pm.

In reality, the flight plans were somehow lost, and needed to be refiled; add one hour, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Fuel was a little confused; add 1/2 hour, do not pass go, do not collect $200. The FBO, though excellent (and fully stocked with Nestea Seftali) was super busy beacuse one of the Turkish soldiers killed was arriving; add 1/2 hour, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Immigration/customs wouldn't begin processing us until we were all in the FBO (see fuel above); add 1/2 hour, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

On the bright side, Mr Ziya Gökmen of United Travel Services, our lecturer and guide for the stay, met us at the airport with a fantastic bus. It was either very new, or just had the interior redone.

We got to the Ciragan Palace at, I dunno, 5:30pm? Barely enough time to check in, crash for 20 minutes, and get ready for dinner.

About the flight. (flight plan to appear) When we were doing the BIG -> IST leg, the controller comes on and asks us where we're going ("direct IST"). We were then informed that "I did not give you direct IST". Great, so "where do you want us to go?" "I did not give you direct IST; turn heading 155." Hopefully this will come out on the audio recording.

Refueling in Istanbul was no where near easy. The fuel guy refused to treat us as a flight of three, and insisted on filling out forms from scratch for each plane. In particular, he asked each of us the same questions (in Turkish) each time.

We eventually got things worked out, and he could do his paperwork.

Ah, treats in the room. Very nice of them. Sadly, I only at the first one, and "saved" the others for later. Housekeeping ate them the next day, apparently.

Common sage in front of the Ciragan Palace. Dad and I were wandering around bored when we first got here. The obvious thing to do was to walk outside in the hotel garden/pool. We shortly discovered a gigantic party behind the Palace, which we walked along but failed to find an unguarded entry. I told myself I was going to come back and get this picture in sunlight, but never did.

Party at Ciragan Palace. I can't decide if the poor lady was hiding or just tired. I think she was hiding.

The amuse-bouche, minced beef and egplant puree, if I remember (which I probably don't).

The appetizer, Ottoman Style Spinach Ravioli "Puruhi". Sun dried chili flakes, butter sauce and wild thyme Piruhi was one of the best and most popular starters of Ottoman Cuisine in the 15th century. The main ingredients of Piruhi are onions and garlic.

In between, corn bread and grape juice. The bread came in a warm stone, the only reason it I took a picture. I mean, it's just corn bread and grape juice. the wine glass was exquisite, with a deep dark blue vein of glass in the stem.

The waiter was a bit of a jokster, and a bit not busy tonight. He ran through some of the probably standard cruise line jokes. Here, the Statue of Liberty. The rest of the staff was amused too, except when they couldn't find the pepper grinder....

Candied pumpkin in syrup, "kadayif", pistachio tuife and "kaymak" ice cream. It was a bit much pumpkin for me; I only ate half.
