2010-05-30 -- Santorini

This day is officially unscheduled, and I enforced it. Dad, Thierry and Mom went flying, I relaxed at the pool and snapped a few photos of the flyby, ate a bit of food, did a bit of work on the photos, and took a nap to Morton Subotnick's "The Wild Bull".

The wine tasting from the first night was rescheduled to be immediately after a quick pilots meeting (where we confirmed that Alexandria is out, and Cairo is in, and the hotel tomorrow night changed). Dinner was at the "Sunset Restaurant", all fish, except for a pork chop. The food was good, but they forgot about three dishes (out of 16, a group of 8 with appetizer and main course). The restaurant was along a dock (harbor), all outside seating. There was a rowdy (and fun) wedding party at the restaurant next to us, complete with fireworks.

While I was sitting out on the patio waiting for Dad to fly by, I shot some boats. This crowded guy is the kanni lannhi (though I admit I couldn't actually read that, and it might be in greek). Also barely noticable is a lady sitting on the lower aft deck all alone, legs dangling over the side. I can't decide if she is bored, contemplative, angry, lonely, ....

Dad made three passes. This was the first; he was on the far side of the crater, but low (and turning apparently).

Killing time, more boats.

After the second pass, I took some dirty laundry up to the office (they said they'd come to pick it up, but since we're leaving tomorrow, I thought I'd deliver it now). I brought the camera since I didn't know what Dad was going to be doing, and spied some cactii on the way down.

The laundry came back during dinner. Six underwear, three pair of socks, three tee shirts and a nice black short sleeve collared shirt, in case you were wondering.

The final pass, on the way to land. Total flight time was about an hour. I worked on the 'blog' and played with the iPad. And got very hot.

The pilots examine Thierry's iPad during the pilots meeting. Yes, all our meetings end with wine tasting.

Well into the wine tasting. Mom appears to be chewing, Dad is tasting, and Lyle is analyzing.

I'm really not sure why everyone is looking this way; I was the last one to get poured. Anyway, this was a super-sweet, dark dark red, somewhat thick, dessert wine. (OH! And I finally got why the host kept calling it a "desert wine", duh!) I was trying to get the pour, since it was blood red and somewhat thick....note to future vacation photographers: don't bother trying to capture action when you've got a great composition sitting in front of you. OK, maybe this one would have been tough with all the crap in the background, but four (different) glasses of (different colored) red wine? The best, by far, was the one in the big glass. More later (well, not more of the wine, since they only made a few thousand bottles of the stuff).

Thierry, the expert wine taster....or wine mixer.

Jeffrey, just after tasting the sweet dessert wine. This was about half a minute after actually tasting it, when his face settled down.

The winner of the tasting, Domaine Siglas, Mavrotragano. "Red dry wine made from the indigenous grape variety of Santorini called marrotragano. Aged for 18 months in new oak barrels. Ready to drink now, but also has a great ageing potential. L082229". A very strong wine. You can maybe buy some from Iama Wine Store.

After taking a terrible photo of some plants with white houses in the background, I needed to run to catch up to the group. Seems that where we thought the taxis were going to pick us up and where the taxis thought they were going to pick us up didn't agree. Of course, we had to go to them.... Anyway, while running to catch up, this cat decided to lay down right here. Terrible place to lay down, but pretty cat. Shoot and run, a good skill to practice.

Lemonia is a pretty name for a rather not so pretty donkey next to the spa at Kirini. You'll notice that there isn't a picture of Lemonia here, just the sign.

At first glance, this picture looks wrong. It looks like the top middle is wildly overexposed, or like the film was exposed to something bad (not that I know anything about film). Nope, this is reality...OK, the sun was setting, and maybe that changed the color a bit. In the center is the wedding party, and on the right is the "Sunset Restaurant", where we ate dinner. Or, where some of us ate dinner, and one of us waited for for them to cook a forgotten lobster. The white trail is a trail from the harbor up to Ola.

Stuffed peppers. Cheese and herbs. I definitely tasted feta, probably some mozarella, maybe some kind of cream cheese or ricotta. I was shocked to discover they were chile peppers, and not green peppers. Yum! .picture="B0310.JPG" A massive bowl of lobster spagetti. Compare size to the wine glass on the left side, or the empty chair at the top. This was for four people, though only three people ordered it. Five people ate it, so it all averaged out.

Fried calamari. The grilled calamari (no picture) came complete, but sliced.

Happily married. They were busy; at sunset they took a short boat ride (with firecrackers and horns to send them off), then fireworks on the hill, then danching with more firecrackers thrown at their feet. We had to wait for the dance to end, then walked through here....with firecrackers thrown at our feet too. We probably could have gotten a riotous reception if we started dancing.
