2010-05-28 -- Malta to Santorini

A late, late start to our flying day. We left the hotel at 10:30, except Jeffrey, Renee and Thierry who left at 9:30. When we got to the planes (20 minute drive, 40 minutes to pass through the airport) Jeffrey was still on the ground. Yikes! We all had fuel, so it was just a matter of getting loaded and making sure Jeffrey wasn't stuck.

The flight was uneventful, except for the sharp descent at the end. Santorini is a bit hilly, and we flew over the island before landing. Route: LMML -> AGARI -> DEMAG -> AMAXI -> VEGES -> IRA -> ERITI -> LGSR. This route flew us over Crete, then backtracked up to Santorini, about 100nm extra. After DEMAG, we got direct MIL, then direct SNI at about 105nm out, which removed the backtrack.

Dinner was at the hotel (Hotel Kirini) restaurant ("The White Cave"), after some swimming and spontaneous "wine tasting" (though there was only one kind of wine being tasted). We finished dinner watching the full moon rise over the hills.

Malta International Airport has 26 (or so) check in counters, all of which were empty. Really. Twenty-six.

This ultralight was waiting for departure after us. We heard on the radio that he turned around (still on the ground) due to engine trouble.

Cruise ships don't have the same problem. Hopefully there is a bus to take people up.

I'm not sure we're travelling light or not. Three people. Four suitcases, two duffel bags, two laptops, two camera bags, a catch-everyting-else bag, and all the flight gear. For 80 days. OK, maybe we are light (and it's all carry on :-)).

It's all worth it though. The pool at Hotel Kirini in Santorini. Steve and Steve talk flying (probably).

A tomato filled with a parmesean cheese sauce (not sure what else to call it) and a ham-orange-on-a-cracker. Both delicious, both not on the menu so I can't give a good description.

"Tuna with Mediterranean Vegetables, extra Virgin Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar." I didn't really care for the tuna. Then again, the only tuna I eat that is cooked comes in little cans, so this might have been fantastic.

We were not very good diners, probably because we were at poolside, it was cold out (they gave us all blankets) and the day was long and moderately stressful. I caught this mostly by accident. High ISO on a cheap camera, sigh.

This was supposed to be "Lobster Moussaka with Santorinian Capper Leaves" but I really couldn't see anything. I didn't have a very good seafood night, since I didn't especially care for the lobster either.

"Strawberry-Chocolate Tiramisu, Caramel and Greek Coffee sauce." Loved the tiramisu, but given I don't drink coffee the sauce (the blob on the left) didn't mix so well.

Just at the end of dinner, the moon rose over the ocean. It was blocked by the rock, and we could see the glow but not the moon. This caused great excitement. When it finally did arrive....

...we took a few photos and went to bed with pleasant thoughts.
