2010-05-24 -- Marrakesch to Gibraltar to Ibiza, Spain

Another flying day, but hopefully an interesting one. We're going to Ibiza Spain, but stopping for fuel, lunch and the hell of it in Gibraltar. We ran up to the top of the rock via the "Cable Car Gibraltar", gazed at the ships in the water, the runway (which was obscured by another rock) and the apes. Yes, apes. We ate lunch at the Piccadilly Garden Bar, accompianied by a very noisy road construction crew.

Route one: GMMX -> MAK -> CSD -> CBA -> ROMSO -> TNG -> BARPA -> LXGB
Route two: LCGB -> PIMOS -> MGA -> SUMMO -> ALT -> BRUNO -> LEIB

It was a little messy getting out of Marrakesch. Lots of paperwork and negotiating.

The Gibraltar airport is bisected by a road. Here, we're crossing the runway in a taxi.

About the only thing to do here is to take the tram to the top of the rock.

I was surprised to learn there are apes at the top. I wasn't so surprised to learn that they have learned to associate plastic bags with food, and that people feed them.

The apes were at least very calm.

Lots of cargo boats anchored here. Last stop before the atlantic? First stop after the atlantic?

Dad, with Gibralter (or probably Spain) in the background. Although the airport is at the base of the rock, it is difficult to get a picture of it with people.

I wasn't so lucky getting a nice shot of the apes dangling on the railings.

The Cable Car of Gibraltar is steep.

The cars bang up against the supports when going by. Most amusing when there is someone afraid of heights on board.

Lunch was decent (a bacon and cheese panini) but noisy and generally unplesant. In addition to Piccadilly Garden Bar (mostly sandwiches and seafood) there is also at least one pizzaria at the base of the tram.

After lunch, back to the airport to pay fees (in Pounds, twice, because they couldn't (or wouldn't) put everything on one bill -- which annoyed us because we needed to change money twice; who carries Pounds anymore?). Here, the control tower for the road (I'm guessing).

The airport terminal is right at the border, and one sign suffices for all travelers.

We scored a bus for the trip from the terminal to the planes.

Always difficult to get a good picture of the plane when we're trying to depart. People keep getting in the way, opening doors, etc, etc. N850SJ at Gibraltar.

Ever wondered what pilots do when the auto pilot is on (other than sleep, if they're pilots on Northwest)? They read charts on the iPad and photograph interesting displays.

Dinner was at a restaurant in the old section of Ibiza. I got "Spinachsalad with warm Goatcheese" (which I forgot to photograph, and was quite delicious) and "Chickenbreast on Currysauce" (which was almost quite delicious, but the sauce was too creamy, the chicken breast was monstrous, and the rice was either instant or way over cooked). No idea what the name of the restaurant was, but it was tucked away up the street from the Sandal Shop.
