2010-05-19 -- Paris

Sigh. I got to bed last night, again, after 2am, and woke up at 7:30am. We had a tour of Paris (by bus, which I hate) this morning, and I missed most of it by dozing off after each stop. We stopped at the Trocadero to gaze at the Eiffel Tower, then drove under said tower and by Ecole Militaire. We stopped in the Hotel des Invalides, which, for some reason, has a lot of canons inside. And a tank from the first World War. OK, I guess those are in the Musee de l'Armee. Notre Dame was next. The rest is a blur, all on the bus.

After a quick and light lunch consisting of a Coke, we all split up and did our own things. Some went shopping. Some went flying. Some went walking. Some just went to the airport to retrieve items or to prepare for the next leg. I walked 10 miles, down to L'ile St. Louis. It was a pleasant enough walk....until I headed back into the afternoon sun, after taking far fewer photos than expected.

I returned with all of 40 minutes to get ready for a dinner cruise on the Seine. The meal was decent, but nothing special. I forgot to take pictures, even with the camera next to the plate. OK, I was hungry, but nothing in the presentation prompted me to take a picture. The cruise was amusing, but not something I'd recommend instead of real dinner entertainment. The view was the same stuff I walked by all day, but slightly different, and not really any better. Just rent a bike, pedal up and down the bank all day, and find a pizzaria.

Your prayer here, for 1 Euro. I'm counting 9x5 candles per box, and 32 boxes, so 1440 Euro waiting here. Not a bad racket. For 5 Euro, you can upgrade from a tin to a glass.

I took a lot of these, and had some trouble figuring out which was the best. So, I put up the top three.

I like this building. I liked it the first time I saw it sixteen years ago from the top of the Eiffel Tower. Just a massive metal and glass building from the early 1900's. Sixteen years ago, I imagined fantastic steam belching machinery powering all sorts of exotic contraptions. Now, I know what to call it. Steam Punk. Not sure if I read The Difference Engine in 1994 (or even if it was published then).
